The 1099-NEC threshold moved to $2,000, plenty of published guidance still says $600, and that is only the fourth item on this list.

Form 1040 with business
Pick your state to see your total.

Your personal return reports your income for the year to the IRS and works out your tax or refund. U.S. residents file Form 1040, and so do U.S. citizens and green card holders abroad, on their worldwide income. Anyone else with U.S. income files Form 1040-NR.
Both include the same return. Pick Express when your deadline is close.

Four common situations, and the return each one files.
Form 1040, plus a state return in most states.
Form 1040 on worldwide income, often lowered by the foreign income exclusion.
Form 1040-NR on U.S. income only, often with a new ITIN.
Schedule C or E added to your return for business or rental income.
You share your documents. We prepare, file and track.

Yes, if you are a U.S. citizen or green card holder. The IRS taxes your income from every country, wherever you live. Exclusions for income earned abroad and credits for foreign taxes often lower what you owe, sometimes to zero.
You file Form 1040-NR if your LLC does business in the U.S., even in a year with no profit, or if you have other U.S. income to report. Either way, the LLC itself files Form 5472, which is a business return. You can price it on our Business Tax Return page.
April 15 for most people. If you live abroad and file Form 1040, you get an automatic extension to June 15, though interest on any unpaid tax starts April 15. Form 1040-NR is due April 15 if you had U.S. wages with tax withheld or an office in the U.S., and June 15 if not.
Yes. Form 4868 moves your filing deadline to October 15, and we file it at no cost. It extends the time to file, not the time to pay, so any tax you owe is still due on the first date. From abroad, the same form takes you from June 15 to October 15.
It lets you leave up to $130,000 of income earned abroad off your 2025 taxable income, and up to $132,900 for 2026. You qualify by living abroad for a full tax year, or by spending 330 full days outside the U.S. within 12 months in a row.
An ITIN is the IRS number for people who must file a U.S. return but cannot get a Social Security number. You need one for Form 1040-NR if you have no SSN. We apply for it together with your return for $249.
Yes, for any U.S. person, meaning a citizen, green card holder or U.S. resident, whose accounts outside the U.S. went over $10,000 combined at any time during the year. It goes to FinCEN, not the IRS. The deadline is April 15, and it extends on its own to October 15.
Most states tax the income of the people who live there, and your card adds that return once you pick your state. Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington and Wyoming do not tax wages, so you file no state income tax return there.
File it as soon as you can, since penalties on unpaid tax grow each month. If you are owed a refund, you can usually still claim it for up to 3 years after the original due date. Add each earlier year on your card at the same price.
Standard returns are filed in 10 business days or less once your documents are complete, and Express returns in 3. Your dashboard shows each step, up to the IRS acceptance.
